As experienced Adelaide podiatrists with a special interest in proactive care, we pride ourselves on taking a preventative approach to common foot health conditions such as Morton’s neuroma.
What is Morton’s neuroma?
A neuroma is a painful irritation, thickening, or growth of nerve tissue.
Morton’s neuroma is a specific type of foot neuroma that affects the interdigital nerves between the toes in the ball of the foot.
What are some of the signs and symptoms of Morton’s neuroma?
- Pain between your toes—often between the third and fourth toes
- As neuroma pain is nerve pain, it is usually characterised by burning sensations, pins and needles, tingling, numbness, and / or radiating pain into the toes
- Feeling like there’s a small stone under the ball of your foot
- Inflammation, swelling, or pain under the ball of your foot
What are some key causes of Morton’s neuroma?
- Inadequate footwear—especially footwear that places extra strain on the balls of your feet such as high-heeled or narrow shoes which compress the nerve between your toes
- Repeated pressure on the ball of your foot—often from flat feet or high arches
- Abnormal gait and / or other biomechanical issues that aggravate the nerve
- Bunions or hammertoes
How can Morton’s neuroma be treated?
As always, prevention is better than cure—which is why our Adelaide podiatrists encourage proactive foot health and early intervention wherever possible, especially if a foot neuroma is suspected.
Common Morton’s neuroma treatment strategies we can explore include:
- Foot and toe strengthening exercises
- Helping you select appropriate, fitting footwear with enough depth and width
- Using custom orthotics in your shoes to take pressure away from the neuroma and alleviate pain
For more complex cases of Morton’s neuroma, we have a number of additional ways of stopping and managing that pain. These may include options such as ultrasound or cortisone injections depending on your individual circumstances.
